The future of manufacturing will be shaped by the people we inspire, educate, and develop today. At the University of Kentucky’s Fujio Cho Department of Engineering Technology, that belief is reflected in two complementary initiatives designed to strengthen the manufacturing workforce pipeline: the Fujio Cho Smart Manufacturing Summer Academy and the Fujio Cho Leadership Lecture Series.
Together, these initiatives extend the department’s educational mission across generations. The Summer Academy introduces middle and high school students to engineering, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies, while the Leadership Lecture Series brings executives, educators, innovators, students, and industry professionals together to explore the leadership capabilities needed for the future of manufacturing.
Under the leadership of Dr. Nelson Akafuah, the department is advancing a broader vision to position the University of Kentucky as a leader in Lean education, Smart Manufacturing, and workforce development. These two initiatives demonstrate how that vision can translate into meaningful experiences—from inspiring young students to consider careers in engineering and manufacturing to preparing current and future leaders to navigate technological and workforce transformation.
At the center of both initiatives is a commitment to connecting education, industry, and workforce development. By creating opportunities for students and professionals to learn from real-world challenges and one another, the department is helping build the talent, leadership, and collaborative capacity required for the next era of manufacturing.
Fujio Cho Smart Manufacturing Summer Academy Inspires Tomorrow's Innovators
Building the future workforce starts early.
The Fujio Cho Smart Manufacturing Summer Academy introduces middle and high school students to the possibilities available in engineering, advanced manufacturing, robotics, automation, and digital technologies through immersive, hands-on learning experiences.
Participants engage with modern manufacturing technologies, problem-solving activities, teamwork, and Lean thinking principles while gaining exposure to real-world engineering and manufacturing environments. These experiences help students connect concepts learned in the classroom with the technologies, careers, and challenges shaping modern industry.
The Academy reflects the Fujio Cho Department of Engineering Technology’s commitment to developing the workforce pipeline well before students enter college. By building curiosity, confidence, and awareness at an early age, the program encourages students to envision themselves as future engineers, technologists, innovators, and manufacturing leaders.
As manufacturers continue to face significant workforce and technology transitions, early-engagement programs such as the Summer Academy provide an important bridge between education and future career opportunities.
Fujio Cho Leadership Lecture Series Launches at UK
Developing the future manufacturing workforce also requires preparing the leaders who will guide it.
The inaugural Fujio Cho Leadership Lecture Series will launch on November 5, 2026, at the University of Kentucky, bringing together executives, innovators, educators, students, and industry leaders for a day focused on the future of leadership, technology, and operational excellence.
Co-hosted by UK Innovate, the Lecture Series is inspired by the leadership philosophy of Fujio Cho and the principles of continuous improvement, respect for people, and servant leadership.
Under the theme “Leadership for the Next Era of Manufacturing and Service Delivery: From Lean Foundations to Smart Operations,” the program will explore how established leadership and operational principles can evolve alongside artificial intelligence, digital technologies, workforce transformation, innovation, and other forces reshaping organizations.
The Lecture Series is designed to create a forum where leaders from industry, education, and research can exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and explore emerging opportunities in workforce development, executive education, applied research, technology commercialization, and innovation. For students, it provides direct access to leaders and perspectives shaping the future of industry.
